Friday Figures: Leaving the Traditional Work Structure

I confess. I took a much needed break from work last week and skipped my Friday Figures post. I figured that most of you were probably doing the same.

This week's factoid is about workers' confidence in leaving the traditional work structure. We're seeing a growing number of workers saying that they feel comfortable with leaving the corporate lifeline and going out and becoming a free agent, contractor or small business owner. In fact, 62% of us say we have confidence in making the leap, which is up more than 10 percentage points from 2005.

That's a pretty high number if you ask me. I am sure we've all thought or even dreamed about working for ourselves in some capacity and walking away from the rat race. But the fact that a growing majority of us are confident and willing to make the change is quite interesting.

The real question is how many people will act on those intentions. And while the number is growing, it's not significant - yet. So what makes you want to leave the corporate world? What prevents you?

True. Lot's of people are planning it, but somehow don't manage to stand up for their word. Perhaps their expectations were so high when they had that idea. It's always easier to procrastinate than to stand up to our decisions.

It is a big move, isn't it? Many of us aren't ready to cut the cord. The corporate system gives us some sense of stability -- perceived or real. It's a big jump to leave that. But everyone that I know who has done it is quite happy and has a renewed feeling of freedom.

I've met several people who said the same thing about quiting their job and plan on starting a small business but are still working for the same employer. Most of them said that it was about family matters which they prioritized.

I was one of those people that did it! I talked about it for a few years-- and once I had a baby I tried so hard to keep the balance but I felt I wasn't doing a great job at work or at home. That is what really made me decide it was time ---but I have to be honest it took another two years to do it. And, it has been the best thing I ever did, for both the company and me! Really! I now am doing projects for the company I use to work for.. and when I am doing work for them I am so focused because there is no guilt about not spending time with my family. And when I am with my family there is no guilt about things I need to get done for work.

Most of us probably face this kind of challenge. We often come across complex situation which leads us to procrastinating our plans.
