My Campus Chronicles
Our college blog dedicated to helping students prepare for life outside of college.
I came across a great site that job seekers should find very helpful as they plan their careers. The site, CareerVoyages.gov, was set up by the Department of Labor and is geared toward students, parents and those looking to change careers. I really wish I would have had access to a site like this when I was thinking about what type of career I wanted to pursue because it really provides a great deal of information and advice on "in-demand" careers, salaries and how to get started on the job search.
I don't know about you, but I really didn't know what I wanted to do when I was in high school and college. This site would have helped me out and at least given me some ideas on where to focus my job search.
There are a few sections that I think are particularly good:
“Day in the Life” job videos -- so you can see what it is really like to be a chemist, customer service representative, sales person or even a welder
Parent section -- this area of the site helps parents discuss career options with their children and identify jobs that may be a good fit
Career Compass -- a page that helps job seekers find the jobs that interest them the most
I recommend that you check it out -- even if you are already well on your way to the Big Time!!

Great information Kip. My niece and her friends are in the "what do I want to be when I grow up?" stage-- and this site had some really interesting information for them.Especially the day in the life. Since those of us already in our careers know that what you study in college and the working world are really two different things!

This is a great site... I have to say that one thing that bugs me about government sites is that they usually will not talk about or link back to other sites that ARE NOT affiliated with the government. Why don't they list some coaching companies on their Career Advisors page? And on their Career Changers page you can find "MyJobPath" which is like 3x5 cards on steroids... not very useful (its sponsored by the gov't so what do you expect).
When approached about linking to JibberJobber.com they say they can't endorse it, even though (a) its better than what they have to offer (advice saying use a notebook to keep track of your search) and (b) I'm an american citizen... paying taxes and all that.
Oh well, my point is this is a nice resource but since they have this limitation of only recommending other gov't sites, make sure this is not your last place to look for information.
(rant over :p)

I wish I would have taken a skills quiz or test prior to going to college like the one on Career Compass. I think it would have helped me discover what I was cut out for as opposed to just trying to fit into a career that I thought would be an appropriate choice.
